Cultivated Management, Productivity

People are not efficient, but they can be effective

A¬†few year’s back I attended a talk by Dr Paul Thomas about banning the boss and removing management. It was a brilliant talk and the sentiment is very sound – leave people alone to their job.

One quote that stood out for me and resonated deeply was this:

People are not efficient, but they can be effective

This is something I knew on a basic level but never really articulated in words. But it makes a lot of sense. I took it to heart and it changed the way I looked at productivity.

I once tried to make people more efficient. I now work on the systems and the processes and the automation that supports them. That’s where efficiency is gained – the people are best left alone, in the right environments, to do the job they were hired to do.
