The Diary of a Manager
I've just edited, modernised and brought back to life The Diary of a Manager! Free to download. Might make you smile.
One of the many challenges with switching careers over the last 20 years (Software Testing > Dev Management > HR > Agility > HR > Leadership etc) is that my books from a few years back don't always reflect my current insights.
One such book was my classic "The Diary of a Manager". Heavily influenced by the "Diary of a Nobody" by George and Weedon Grossmith (one of my all time favourite books), I share this fictitious diary of a manager blamed for the downfall of CBPBOS Inc.
He's brought in last minute to oversee a giant tech deployment, only for it to fail and cause scandal amongst the British tech community (and government). He is blamed - a scapegoat (hence the cover image) - and his diary is the only way to save his reputation.
Well, I've spent some time refreshing it, fixing the myriad of typos (not sure I even spell checked the original!) and have brought it into today's world.
Upon re-reading it I was struck with how salient the point of the book is; big corporates shirking responsibility and passing the buck to unsuspecting people.
You can download it immediately in PDF version here. Or head to LeanPub to grab a copy there, in a variety of formats. Totally free of course!
